CASE STUDY

Scalloped feature wall nursery, Hanford

The short answer

In a small bedroom in Hanford, I turned tired beige walls full of old fixing holes into a nursery for the customer's grandchildren. After filling, sanding and repainting the ceiling and coving, I painted the lower walls a deep blue-green with a hand-finished scalloped edge. The customer was so happy they said they'd recommend me to anyone.

What did the customer need?

The customer needed a small bedroom turned into a bright, playful nursery for their grandchildren. The brief was a two-tone scheme: a soft neutral on the upper walls and a deep blue-green below, joined by a row of scallops. It had to feel fun for a child but still calm enough for a nursery. The ceiling, coving, skirting boards and door frame were all part of the job, so the whole room would feel fresh once the furniture went back in.

What condition was it in?

The room was sound but tired, with beige walls covered in dents, scuffs and holes from old fixings. Shelves and curtain poles had come and gone over the years, and every one left a mark. The coving had a discoloured line along its edge, and the paint on the door frame was worn through in places. None of it was serious, but a new colour scheme would have shown up every flaw.

What preparation was needed?

The walls needed proper filling and sanding before any colour could go on. This was a Full redecoration because every surface was repainted and the walls had to be repaired first, not just freshened up.

1

Laid dust sheets and masked the skirting boards with low-tack tape.

2

Filled every hole, dent and crack, then sanded each repair flush once dry.

3

Spot-primed the repairs so they wouldn't show through as dull patches.

4

Painted the ceiling and coving in fresh white.

5

Rolled the neutral colour across all the walls, then made a card scallop template, taped it level and marked out the scallops around the room.

Which paints and materials were used?

The upper walls were painted in a soft neutral and the lower walls in a deep blue-green. The blue-green went on in two full coats, as a single coat of a deep colour always looks patchy. The ceiling and coving were finished in white, and the skirting and door frame were repainted to match. Alongside the paint, I used filler, low-tack masking tape and a scallop template I cut from card, so every curve came out the same size.

What was the result?

The finished room is a calm, playful nursery with an even row of scallops running round every wall. The pattern carries round the window, the doorway and into the corners without awkward breaks. The neutral upper walls keep the small room feeling light, and the blue-green below gives it depth. Fresh white coving, ceiling and skirting frame it all neatly, and the customer couldn't have been happier.

Questions about this job

  • How long did the job take?

The job took 2 days from start to finish. That covered the prep, the ceiling and coving, the two-tone walls, the scallop detail and the woodwork.

  • Can scallops go around windows, doors and corners?

Yes. I plan the spacing with a template so the scallops run round windows, doorways and corners without awkward gaps. On this job they carry continuously round the whole room.

  • Will filled holes show through a darker colour?

Not if they're prepared properly. I fill, sand flush and prime each repair before painting, so the finish looks even. Skipping this step is what causes patchy spots, especially with deep colours like this blue-green.
